About Nomvuyo's Tours
My name is Jenny Housdon and I have been involved in tourism and the service industry since 1993. It was at this time I was given the name of "Nomvuyo" by two black friends with whom I worked at the V & A Waterfront in Cape Town. However I only discovered the meaning at a later stage as neither Ceylon (ex Penny-Ferry), nor Lucas would tell me at the time.
Nomvuyo (Gladness + Joy) became my official name amongst my black friends and colleagues, and was the obvious choice once the descision was made to take people on interactive visits to Khayelitsha.
I have been interested in learning more about the culture, language and history of the black population from a young age, and when a colleague suggested visiting Khayelitsha in April 2002, I jumped at the opportunity. The rest is history!
We formed Nomvuyo's Tours and have not looked back.
I still get asked if I am foreign as it is deemed strange that white South Africans spend so much time there given the history of the country. No I am proudly South African, born and raised in Cape Town and working with Vicky Ntozini to promote Khayelitsha and assist the community.
